Melissa Currie

My first Special Guest for Giggles and Tickles is the lovely Melissa Currie. I think her story is inspiring and I love her enthusiasm. I asked Melissa to write out a bit about herself before she started her own business, during and her plans for the future;

“Before I started my journey in business I was in and out of jobs. From being a waitress in a bar to a bingo caller!
When I was sitting my highers I decided to take things further and went to night classes in hand and foot therapy. I was always into make up and fashion when I was younger as I was brought up in the industry, I have been modelling since I was 4 years old. I still take part in the occassional beauty pageants. And I am happy to say I have won a good few too!! When I finished high school I went straight into work and continued night classes, building up my qualifications.
2010 struck. I was made redundant 3 times and in and out of hospital resulting in an operation at the end of the year. Due to my bad sickness record nobody wanted to hire me, I was an excellent sales woman and i knew I was good at what I do, but that did not matter to employers. They just asked for references and when they found out I was off for weeks at a time, the answer was always no.
In 2011 I took matters into my own hands and contracted the Princes Trust, I was going to start my own business. Next thing i knew I was pencilled in for the next business enterprize course. The course was excellent and I was buzzing with ideas for my new business.
In the summertime of 2011 MACS Glasgow Hair & Beauty was born, I finally had the keys to my own property in the West End. I also have my own brand of hair extensions called Wunnabe. I still don’t believe that over 18 months ago I was jobless and lying in a hospital bed.
So its now nearing my 1st birthday. I still have lots more ideas I want to put forward icluding my own brand of spray tan and a showcase. I am nowhere near “resting on my laurels” just yet – far from it!! I am mature enought to know I still have a long way to go before I can afford that dream car : so for the time being it is the public transport and my mums borrowed car for me!
I can’t wait to see what the future will hold for MACS, I am very excited and looking forward to my next chapter. Bring it on!!”
